Miles Funeral Home in Hazlehurst announces the funeral service for Mr. Dewey Arnold Powell, age 91, of Hazlehurst, who passed away on Tuesday, February 05, 2019 after an extended illness. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, February 07, 2019 in the First Baptist Church 30 North Tallahassee Street Hazlehurst, Georgia 31539.
Rev. Brad Waters, Rev. Rick Baldwin & Rev. Robert Wigley will officiate with burial and full military honors in the Shelton Chapel Cemetery-239 Shelton Chapel Road/Fishing Creek Road Lumber City, Georgia.
Mr. Powell was born in Telfair County. He was the son of the late Carl Powell, Sr. & Annie Mathis Powell and was preceded in death by a brother: Carl Powell, Jr. Mr. Powell was an avid golfer, fisherman and hunter who dearly loved the nearby rivers and outdoors surrounding Jeff Davis and Telfair counties. Mr. Powell retired as a Master Sgt. after serving 24 years in the United States Air Force. This occurred after initially serving two years in the Army/Air corps. This military direction took him and his family to Turkey, Europe, North Carolina, Florida, California & Texas. Mr. Powell also served with the Jeff Davis County Sheriff’s Department from 1989 to 1992. Mr. Powell was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hazlehurst.
He is survived by the love of his life his wife of 69 years: Lois Williams Powell of Hazlehurst; Son: Alan Powell (Debbie); Grandson: Austin Powell; Sisters: Runelle Sandiford, Alline Johnson (Raymond)& Joyce Fulford. (Uncle Bud) as he was affectionately known as had many nieces and nephews whom he loved dearly. He particularly enjoyed seeing his family and their children at the Powell family reunions. He was dearly loved by his family and friends. While He will be deeply missed he is now comforted in God’s hands.
Visitation will be 1:00 PM-2:00 PM Thursday, February 07, 2019 at the First Baptist Church in Hazlehurst.
